Markets return to strong growth at ICEF’s 2017 Latin America Workshop

Held between 21 and 23 September 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, ICEF’s 2017 Latin America Workshop hosted 348 participants from 24 countries, an increase in participant numbers of 18% compared to 2016. Educators, education agents and selected service providers shared 3 034 scheduled meetings over two days, enhancing their networks, nurturing existing partnerships and fostering exchanges of ideas.

According to many of the educators who attended the event, agents were well prepared for their meetings and demonstrated good knowledge of their institutions and programmes. Taylor Decker, International Student Admissions Counsellor at Mohawk Valley Community College (USA), said: “As an institution with no prior contacts in Latin America, this was the perfect way for us to get involved. There was a diverse agent group present, all of whom were professional and well prepared.”

As a market, Brazil embodies Latin American dynamism and growth, with outbound student numbers growing by 14% to 247 000 in 2016. Average spend per student is now nearly US$ 9 000 per person, bringing the overall value of the outbound education market in Brazil to US$ 2.2 billion, according to BELTA (The Brazilian Educational and Language Travel Association).

In total, 193 agents represented ten Latin American countries: Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Peru. Ana Cecilia Aguiar, Founder and Managing Director of Brazil’s Good to Great Intercambio, noted, “I attend ICEF Latin America every year, and everything works beautifully. The quality of schools represented is excellent, and I have the opportunity to reinforce existing relationships and build new partnerships.”

In addition to the wide range of networking opportunities on offer, participants benefitted from an extensive seminar programme that included sessions on how to derive maximum value from the ICEF experience, and information and discussion on education markets around the world, including the UK, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Brazil, Chile and Argentina.

The next ICEF Latin America Workshop will take place between 20 and 22 September 2018 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. To find out more, please visit:
