REPORT FROM MELBOURNE

ANZA Workshop Outshines Icelandic Volcano

487 participants attended the 2010 Australia New Zealand Agent Workshop from April 21–23 in Melbourne—including 191 carefully screened agents from 40 countries. The delegates conducted more than 5,000 one-to-one meetings at this annual destination-focused event that puts the spotlight exclusively on educators and service providers in Australia and New Zealand.

But this is not the whole story of the ANZA workshop this year. Many miles from Melbourne as final preparations were well underway for the workshop, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland erupted. More on ICEF and the volcano...

ICEF NORTH AMERICA WORKSHOP

ICEF's Toronto Debut Sets the Pace

The ICEF North America Workshop came to Toronto from May 13–15 and—with a complete sell out weeks in advance and 16% growth over the latest Miami workshop in December 2009—was a resoundingly successful Canadian debut. "As soon as I started my meetings it was clear that only well vetted agents were present," said Juan Tavares of Western Michigan University (US).

NETWORK NEWS

ICEF at NAFSA

ICEF attended the 62nd Annual Conference for NAFSA, held May 30–June 4 in Kansas City. The conference attracted more than 7,200 attendees from 94 countries.

ICEF CEO Markus Badde was featured as an expert speaker on agent relations at a number of NAFSA events this year. He joined a panel discussion in Kansas City entitled "Opportunities and Challenges of Working with Agents", with Cheryl Darrup-Boychuck of USjournal.com, Mitch Leventhal, State University of New York (SUNY), and Andy Nicol of Hobsons Inc. The panel focused on best practices for evaluating, selecting, and working with professional recruitment agents. This session followed a NAFSA webinar by the same name on which Markus also appeared in March.

Also in Kansas City, Markus chaired a second panel called, "Apply best practices with agents to increase international enrollments", with Dr. Karl Markgraf of the University of Wisconsin and Christopher Gas of Thompson Rivers University.

In addition, ICEF sponsored the annual AAIEP Reception (American Association of Intensive English Programs) at NAFSA, held this year at the Raglan Road Irish Pub.
