WORKSHOP ROUNDUP Record Attendance and New Features
The 2010 ICEF Japan Workshop was held in Tokyo last week from March 3-5. Educators from Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas held nearly 1,000 one-to-one meetings with ICEF-screened agents from throughout Japan. "We found ICEF Japan extremely useful for both existing relationships and making excellent new contacts," said Rose Broadley of the UK's Canterbury Christ Church University. Recent months have seen a number of notable developments at ICEF Workshops around the world. Dramatic growth The ICEF Berlin Workshop set a record for attendance for the eighth consecutive year, and the ICEF Middle East and Africa Workshop grew by more than 20% this year alone.
In each of the last eight years, the ICEF Berlin Workshop has set a new record as the world's largest professional networking event for educators and agents. The 2009 workshop in Berlin was the largest-ever ICEF event with 1,740 participants from 97 countries. This included a 13% increase in participating agents over 2008, with the agents coming from 16% more countries than in the previous year. In total 22,744 pre-scheduled business meetings were held over two days. Meanwhile, the ICEF Middle East and Africa Workshop grew 23% this year. 105 institutions throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania, met with 211 ICEF-screened agents from 32 countries in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Innovation Perhaps more than any other regional event in ICEF's global workshop series, The ICEF China Workshop has been a testing ground for new features and services that respond to changes and emerging opportunities in this dynamic marketplace.
In addition to one-to-one meetings between ICEF-screened agents from China and educators from around the world, the event continues to feature meetings between Chinese and international educators—an innovation that began in Beijing and has since extended to other ICEF Workshops. New this year: (i) a half-day training session for Chinese educators on working with student recruitment agents and developing international marketing strategies; and (ii) on-site testing for the Australia-focused Education Agent Training Course (EATC). Overall 20 of the 27 agents who sat this test passed. Reinvention This edition of the long-standing Miami event marked its relaunch as the ICEF North America Workshop—a destination-focussed event providing educators from the US and Canada with the opportunity to showcase their programmes to a large group of agents from all over the world.
The 2009 workshop sold out more than two months in advance, confirming the need for a specialist networking forum in the region. Educators from 140 American and Canadian institutions met with 209 ICEF-screened agents from 52 countries around the world. The ICEF North America Workshop moves to Toronto this May and is almost fully booked. Please see our related item in this issue on destination marketing workshops for more. |
