One of the 37 market intelligence and professional development seminars offered at this year's ICEF Berlin Workshop. For the seventh consecutive year, the ICEF Berlin Workshop again set an attendance record in 2008. See our complete report below. In this issue: ICEF's CEO on the global economic crisis • Latin America Workshop launches in Sao Paulo • New destination-focused workshop for North America • Report from the ICEF China Workshop in Beijing • Seven years of record-breaking growth for the ICEF Berlin Workshop • Findings from the 2008 ICEF Agent Barometer study • Quarterly workshop update A Q&A With ICEF CEO Markus Badde The year has opened on one of the most dramatic and far-reaching economic adjustments in modern history. Banks and major corporations are going under, stock exchanges are shedding value month after month, and everyone is wondering what the year will bring. As CEO of ICEF, Markus Badde has a broad perspective on world markets that is shaped by ICEF's extensive international networks. The Bulletin sat down with Markus recently to get his views on how the current economic crisis could impact the global education market. New Latin America Workshop Launches in Sao Paulo The first-ever ICEF Latin America Workshop will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from September 30 to October 2. "The new Sao Paulo workshop recognises the growing importance of the region in international student markets," says ICEF General Manager Ruediger Laub. "Our goal is to respond to the clear market demand in this area. Major destination countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia, are reporting dramatic growth in Latin American enrolments. At the same time, we have seen a 47% increase over the last two years alone in the numbers of Latin American agents attending ICEF Workshops worldwide." New Destination-Focused Workshop for North America For the last 13 years, the ICEF Americas Workshop has taken place annually in Miami. The last two years in particular have seen an impressive growth rate of 52% (from 272 participants in 2006 to 413 in 2008). 128 educational institutions were represented at the 2008 ICEF Americas Workshop, nearly 60% of which came from the US and Canada. 152 educational agencies attended from 46 countries. To build on these strengths and also recognise important market opportunities for both educators and agents, the ICEF Americas Workshop will be renamed the ICEF North America Workshop in 2009. Learn more about the changing marketplace in North America... The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing provided a spectacular showcase for China on the world stage, not to mention a vivid illustration of both the continuing strength of the Chinese economy and of the country's ability to marshal its resources for the benefit of a major national project. China has also accomplished a potentially even-farther-reaching feat in recent years by achieving the most rapid and substantial expansion of higher education in modern history. As of January 13, there are 191 agents from 33 countries registered, with the largest representation from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Nigeria, Turkey and Iran. Similarly, both the ICEF Japan Workshop (Tokyo, March 3-5) and the ICEF Moscow Workshop (Moscow, March 27-29) are booking quickly. These market-leading workshops are highly rated by participants and both Russia and Japan will continue to figure prominently in the global market in the years ahead. Educators or agents planning to attend Dubai, Moscow, or Tokyo are encouraged to register soon to ensure an available space. |
