This issue features a special introduction to market research, along with news about two new ICEF product groups and the first-ever ICEF Higher Education Workshop in Trondheim. We are also pleased to present field reports from recent workshops in Dubai, Tokyo, and Moscow.

Newsflash: 2008 ICEF Asia Workshop Confirmed for Singapore

The ICEF Asia Workshop will return to its traditional home in Singapore in 2008, marking expanded coverage in the critical Asian student market for agents and education providers. Forty-six percent of the world's international students come from Asia, and as previously reported (see ICEF Expands in Asia"), there will now be three ICEF workshops in this dynamic region: The ICEF Japan Workshop, the ICEF China Workshop, and the ICEF Asia Workshop.
The Asia Workshop will be held at Singapore's Swissôtel The Stamford on April 28-30, 2008, and it will connect education providers with qualified agents from throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Click here for more information.

Getting to Know Your Market: Best Practices in Market Research

Considering that the international education market represents more than US$45 billion dollars, is currently estimated at roughly 2.7 million students, and is expected to grow to more than 8 million students by 2025, international student recruitment is becoming a bigger and bigger priority at institutions all over the world. But there are challenges: the competition for students is fierce, and the dynamics—and potential—of world and regional markets change from year to year.

Well-planned and executed market research can make a significant difference in the success of recruitment programmes. There are many ways to obtain market research, and also different forms and levels of research. Read more...

ICEF to Establish New Higher Education and Training Services

The international education industry is growing by leaps and bounds, which is extremely exciting for the players involved but also challenging because the territory is new and constantly changing. Both education providers and agents have expressed demand for more knowledge, consistency, and standards when it comes to student recruitment practices. In response, ICEF will launch two new products groups later this year with targeted services for the higher education sector and professional development training for both agents and providers. New ICEF Higher Education Workshop in Trondheim

From 2005 to 2006, there was a 50% increase in the number of higher education (HE) institutions attending ICEF workshops. At the same time, many agents have indicated to ICEF that they are actively promoting HE programmes. An important trend is clearly underway.

For this reason, ICEF is launching a new workshop devoted specifically to higher education. The first such workshop is scheduled for September 10 and 11, 2007, in Trondheim, Norway. Read more...

Dubai Keeps On Growing

ICEF workshops are always infused by the energy of the city in which they take place. This year's Middle East Workshop was no exception: it was located in Dubai, UAE, a cosmopolitan business hub renowned for its growth, ambition, and international atmosphere. Dubai is an increasingly important world destination for the education and IT sectors, making it a great fit for ICEF's Middle East Workshop, held this year at the five-star deluxe Jumeirah Emirates Towers in February 2007. The Bright Lights of Tokyo

Japan is one of the biggest contributors of students to study destinations worldwide, making ICEF's Japan Workshop a must-attend event for educational institutions. A total of 266 participants from 186 organisations attended the Tokyo Workshop in March 2007, representing 11% growth over 2006 and solidifying the workshop as the largest and most international event of its kind in Japan. Russia Shows Its Strength

Thanks to higher world oil prices and a boost in productivity, Russia has rebounded this decade from severe economic turmoil in the 1990s. Russians are consequently enjoying a higher standard of living than they have for many years, and this is fueling dramatic growth in demand for study abroad. With the eighth-largest population in the world, Russia holds a great deal of potential for the international education marketplace. Read more...
