The 2006 ICEF Americas Workshop. This issue features special coverage of online recruitment strategies along with a feature report on student mobility trends in the Americas, an expert interview on language usage on the Internet, and a field report from the 2006 ICEF Americas Workshop in Miami. Cheryl Darrup-Boychuck, CEO of USjournal.com, was a featured speaker during the 2006 ICEF Americas Workshop in Miami. ICEF Bulletin recently interviewed Rod Hearps, operations director of EdMedia and developer of ICEF Online. Hearps has been recruiting students via the Internet since 1994 and is a keen observer of online trends. During our conversation, he offered his thoughts on the current state of language usage on the web and the implications for educators and agents. Read more... Student Mobility in the Americas There are three major historic mobility trends in the Americas: (1) the large numbers of students who come to the US from source countries the world over, (2) the movement of Latin American students to the US, and (3) the flow of American students to study abroad destinations in Europe. However, the international student market in the Americas has been shifting in recent years in the wake of stiffening visa requirements in the US and the explosion of educational choice in the global marketplace. The market is now showing signs of further, significant change that will affect not only student movement within the region, but throughout the world. The workshop has an unmistakable Latin flavour, but it brings educators and agents from around the world to this international gateway in South Florida. Read more... Dubai On the Doorstep The countdown is on for February's ICEF Middle East Workshop. The latest tally shows that 267 participants will gather in Dubai February 3-5, 2007, representing 191 organisations from 42 countries. The Middle East Workshop defines the region broadly, drawing qualified agents from Morocco in the west to Bangladesh in the east. Market conditions in the region are dynamic and changing quickly. With a large school-age population, growing investment in education, and still-developing student mobility patterns, this is the time for educators and agents to establish working relationships and for destination countries to build a long-term market position. This year's Middle East Workshop will again take place at Jumeirah Emirates Towers. Watch for a report in the next issue of the Bulletin. See You In Tokyo! Japan's leading agents will gather in Tokyo this March to meet with education providers from around the world during the ICEF Japan Workshop (March 4-6, 2007). The 2006 workshop in Tokyo hosted 250 participants from 167 organisations worldwide, making it the largest and most international professional student recruitment workshop in Japan. Japan has long been an important player in the international education market. It is one of the top sources of students for the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, and hosts roughly 5% of the world's international students. Historically, Japanese students studying abroad have been mainly inclined to shorter-term English-language studies. The last ten years, however, have seen dramatic increases in the number of Japanese students engaged in longer-term and higher education studies abroad, a pattern that seems poised to continue in the years ahead. Watch for a field report from Japan in our next issue and see the ICEF website for registration and programme information. Getting Ready for Moscow Time is running short but registrations are still being accepted for March's ICEF Moscow Workshop (March 27-29). The ICEF workshop is Russia's most important and longest-standing annual student recruitment event. Last year's Moscow Workshop hosted 338 participants from 227 organisations and 29 countries. ICEF Invests in Online Student Recruitment Firm ICEF has acquired an interest in Australia-based EdMedia Student Recruitment Pty Ltd., a leading online student recruitment consultancy serving more than 200 colleges, universities, and corporate clients worldwide. "This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation, and to the online business platform in particular," said ICEF Director Markus Badde. "ICEF's experience in online recruitment dates back to the launch of Internet Course Finders in 1997. Last year alone, our Language Course Finder site received more than 687,000 visits and performed 402,000 searches. Students, agents, and educators increasingly rely on the Internet to connect and work with each other, and we believe that effective online recruitment solutions will be an important value-added complement to our core workshop concept going forward." Rod Hearps, operations director of EdMedia said, "EdMedia is pleased to have ICEF as a stakeholder and partner. ICEF's strong international position will allow us to provide online student recruitment solutions to clients in even more countries, especially within Europe. ICEF's investment in our firm is a further evolution of the business relationship created via our joint venture company ICEF Online GmbH."
